1983
- The National Institute of Personal Secretaries
(NIPS), Tamil Nadu Chapter was inaugurated in
April 1983 at the Taj Coromandel, Madras under
the Chairpersonship of Ms Shirley Chatterton who
was Secretary to Mr Maneck Patel the Director
of Operations and General Manager at Taj Coromandel.

OCTOBER 1984
- At the 6th Congress of Secretaries in Asia,
hosted by NIPS in Bombay Shirley Chatterton, Carmen
Shunker, Suzanne D’Monte, Penelope Smith, Marjorie
Eldred and Patricia Huggins represented the Chapter.

|
1985 - BEST SECRETARY
- The Chapter conducted a contest to crown the
Best Secretary in TamilNadu. Ms Bernie Saldanha
of Union Carbide was crowned the ‘Best Secretary’.
|
|
JUNE 1986
- Shirley Chatterton represented the Chapter at
the 7th Congress of Secretaries in Asia, hosted
by the Malaysian Association of Secretaries and
Administrators.
|
|
1987 SECRETARIES DAY CELEBRATIONS
- SECRETARIES DAY which is now known as ADMINISTRATIVE
PROFESSIONALS DAY was celebrated for the first
time.
|
|
SOTYC 1987 - The First All-India SECRETARY OF
THE YEAR CONTEST (SOTYC) was organized. The Regional
winner was Ms Bernie Saldanha of Union Carbide.
Bernie went on to become the 1st Runner Up at
the All India finals.

1988 -
The Chapter conducted a workshop called ‘Sec-Trek’
at Fisherman’s Cove.
|
|
|

1988
- Ms Carmen Shunker, who worked with Grindlays
Bank Limited, a founder member and Hon. Treasurer
on the Managing Committee took over as Chairperson
of the Chapter.
|
|
NAME CHANGE - The Institute incorporated the
word Professional in place of Personal considering
the changing scenario and the profile of a Secretary
making iti National Institute of Professional
Secretaries.
|
|
SOTYC 1989 - The Regional winner was Ms Rema
Ramachandran of ANZ Grindlays Bank. Rema was
1st Runner-Up at the All India Final.
Ms Cheryl Janagaraj, of Standard Chartered
Bank who was first Runner-Up at the Regional
level won the All India contest.

1990 -
A workshop called ‘Sec-Stairway’ was conducted
at the Sindhoori Hotel.
|
|
SOTYC 1991 - The Regional winner was Ms Barbara
Rozario of Hongkong Bank.
(Late) Ms Sukeshini Sigamani of UNICEF,
the Regional 1st Runner-Up won the All India
Crown
|
|
NATIONAL CONVENTION - The Tamil Nadu Chapter hosted the
Third National Convention. Theme : “The Past
with a Future”.

|
100% ATTENDANCE AWARDS - For Members who had attended every
single monthly meeting and presented at our Secretaries
Day Celebrations

|
SOTYC 1995 - The regional winner was Ms Cheryl
Janagaraj of ANZ Grindlays Bank.
|
|
|
|
1996 - Ms Arlene Fernandez, who worked
with Britannia Industries Limited took over as
Chairperson.
|
|
NEWSLETTER - A monthly Newsletter was introduced,
now titled ‘On-line’.
Ms Karena Toner, then Hon. Secretary was instrumental
in starting the same.
|
|
|
|
1998 - Ms Cheryl Janagaraj, who worked
with ANZ Grindlays Bank at that time, took over
as Chairperson.
|
|
SOTYC 1998 - The Regional winner was Ms Uma
Viswanathan of Britannia Industries Limited.
|
|
|
|
1999 - Ms Karena Toner, who works with
the Vice Chairman & Managing Director of Ramco
Systems Limited, took over as Chairperson.
|
|
BOSS’S DAY CELEBRATIONS - On 16th October 1999, the Chapter
celebrated International Boss’ Day for the first
time.
|
|
MOST VALUABLE MEMBER AWARD (MVM) 1999-2000
- An award was introduced to recognize a member
for her contribution to the running of the Association.
Ms Audrey Powell of Funskool India Limited was
selected Most Valuable Member for 1999 – 2000.

|
MEMBER GET MEMBER AWARD (MGM)
- Ms Marie Baskaran of EID Parry Limited was presented
with this award.
|
|
SOTYC 2000 - The Regional winner was Ms Ruth
Juliet Antonio of CitiBank.
|
|
MVM 2000-2001 - Ms Sheryl Stevenage of Murugappa
Manangement Services was adjudged Most Valuable
Member.
|
|
SEPTEMBER 2000 - Karena Toner represented the Tamil
Nadu Chapter at the 14th Congress of Secretaries
in Colombo, Sri Lanka hosted by the SriLankan
Association of Secretaries.
|
|
|
|
2001 - Ms Audrey Greenwood, who worked
with Pepsico Holdings India Limited, took over
as Chairperson.
|
|
MVM 2001-2002 - Ms Sheila Christina Vyas was adjudged
Most Valuable Member.
|
|
SOTYC 2002 - The Regional winner was Ms Banupriya
Nayar of Arthur Anderson.
|
|
MVM 2002-2003 - Ms Delphene Lawrence of ITC Limited
was adjudged Most Valuable Member.
|
|
BEST SECRETARY AWARD - Ms B K Seethalakshmi of EID Parry
was awarded Best Secretary Award by Blue Dart
for her contribution to Cost Effective Office
Development.

2003 - Ms Karena Toner of Ramco Systems
Limited again took over as the Chairperson.
|
|
NAME CHANGE - In keeping with the changing scenario
and the vast profile of a Secretary, the National
Institute of Professional Secretaries (NIPS),
changed its name to the Indian Association of
Secretaries and Administrative Professionals (IASAP).
|
|
MARCH 2004 - A workshop titled ‘Empowering
to Excel’ was conducted at the Beverley Hotel.
|
|
20 YEARS
- Commemorating the 20th year of the TamilNadu
Chapter, a gala dinner was organized at the Taj
Coromandel, on 8th November 2003, a commemorative
memento was presented to members.

|
MVM 2003-2004 - Ms Jessie Osman of Grindlays Bank
was adjudged Most Valuable Member.
|
|
SOTYC 2004 - Ms Sandra Smith of HSBC, the Regional
winner also won the All India title and was crowned
All India Secretary of the Year.
|
|
AUGUST 2004 - At the 16th Congress of Secretaries
and Administrative Professionals, hosted by the
Singapore Association of Personal and Executive
Secretaries, the Chapter was represented by Karena
Toner, Marilyn Draper, Anne Parameswaran and Sandra
Smith. Sandra, as All India winner of the SOTYC
2004 represented the India at the Professional
Secretary Award.

MVM 2004-2005 - Ms Sheila Vyas was again judged
the Most Valuable Member.
|
|
SOTYC 2006 - The Regional winner was Ms Judaline
Srinivasan of Centre for Disease Control and Prevention.
Judy was 1st Runner-Up at the All India finals.

|
NOVEMBER 2006 – IASAP were the proud hosts for
the second time, hosting the 17th ASA Congress
of Secretaries in Asia Pacific in Mumbai, under
the stewardship of All India President Shera Langana.
The Tamil Nadu Chapter was represented by Chairperson
Karena Toner and Karen Peterson.

APRIL-MAY 2007 - The Chapter had the proud privilege
of conducting a National Convention for the second
time, which was a resounding success - the 10th
National Convention with the theme “Vision Knows
no Boundaries”.
|
|
NOVEMBER 2006 - At the 18th ASA Congress, hosted
by the Ikatan Sekretaris Indonesia, who were celebrating
their 35th year, the Chapter was represented by
Karena Toner, Judaline Srinivasan and Surekha
Johnson. This being a special Congress between
two SOTYCs, Judaline, as the All India first runner-up
of the SOTYC 2006 had the privilege to represent
the India at the Professional Secretary Award.

SEPTEMBER 2007 - For the first time in 25 years
the Chapter members went on an overnight picnic
organized at the Sterling Resorts, Yercaud.
|
|
APRIL 2008 - The Chapter celebrated its 25th
anniversary and International Administrative Professionals
Week, with three events - an all day picnic to
Le Waterina on the 19th of April 2008, a lunch
for member Secretaries at The Park on the 23rd
of April 2008 (International Administrative Professionals
Day) and a dinner commemorating the Chapter’s
Silver Jubilee at Taj Coromandel on the 27th of
April 2008. A commemorative memento was presented
to members on this auspicious occasion.

MVM 2007-2008 - Ms Sheila Christina Vyas was adjudged
Most Valuable Member for the 3rd time for her
continued contribution to the Chapter’s activities.
|
|
25 YEAR PINS – 25 year pins were presented to
Penelope Smith, Suzanne D’Monte, Alexis D’Souza,
Marilyn Draper, Marie Baskaran and Jessie Osman,
who were present at the celebrations to celebrate
their long standing membership with the Chapter.
|
|
COMMITTEE MEMBERS – Members who had served on the
Managing Committee over the last 25 years and
were still a part of the Association were also
honoured at the Silver Jubilee.
